Gardening
With a garden trowel in one hand, a croquet mallet in the other, and laughing at his own corny garden puns, this organic enthusiast practically lives in his back yard. Quick with a joke, or to grow artichokes, there's nowhere that he'd rather be.

11 Seed Catalogs You Should Read This Winter

5 Minute Read
It’s snowing in Pennsylvania today. Which means I have the day off. Which means I’m reading seed catalogs, planning my spring garden, and ignoring all other chores in the house because I’m too distracted with the dreams of my perfect 2019 garden. You’re probably familiar with the classic seed catalogs from Burpee, Gurney’s, and Harris, but there’s a whole world of catalogs out there that you NEED to investigate this year. I took the liberty of doing the heavy work for you, by calling i

Ignore the Recalls — Grow Your Own Romaine Lettuce
David Oblas

With romaine lettuce back on the shelves in most grocery stores, and the CDC investigation winding down (it’s still ongoing as of this writing), it makes me wonder... why aren’t more people growing their own lettuce? We could have all been eating Caesar salads this whole time! In 2018, the US saw 2 major E. coli outbreaks related to romaine lettuce. The first outbreak, with illnesses starting on March 13, was traced back to <a href

What Can I Do With All These Darn Fall Leaves?

6 Minute Read
I love a good maple tree in the fall. Especially the Sugar Maple, with it’s bright orange flaring colors. That’s why we chose to plant one 6 years ago after our wedding in October. It’s our wedding tree. We love it. But Oh. My. God. The amount of leaves that drop from it! Like, really? It’s still a sapling by maple tree standards, but between it, and our neighbor’s gigantic Oak tree in their front yard, sometimes we can barely see grass in that corner of our lawn.

Can I Still Start A Vegetable Garden In September?

Sure! Well, wait… did you want to grow tomatoes and peppers? Because then, no. Well, wait, again… you can plant those now if you live in zones 9 or 10. Let’s back up for a minute. How about we assume you want to grow ALL THE THINGS, but you don’t happen to live on the southern tip of Florida, or the coastline of California. You’re basically going to be out of luck when it comes to the majority of ‘warm weather crops,’ which include such favorites as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, corn,

Natural Ways To Keep Deer Out Of Your Garden
David Oblas

August 26, 2018

5 Minute Read
Deer are beautiful creatures. People tend to stop what they are doing, and just watch for awhile when they see a deer grazing in a field. I, myself, am guilty of pulling over on the local roads to point out herds of deer to my daughter. A couple of poorly answered questions later (“Where do they live?”, “Why are they watching us, too?”, “How do they know where to cross the street?”), and we’re back to driving. Deer are great from a distance. But then they show up in your back yard. In

Elevate Your Gardening Game By Growing In Hanging Baskets

4 Minute Read
Bro, do you even lift? Boost your floral impact. Level up your plants. Uplift your patio garden. Raise the roots. Great, we got a bunch of hanging basket related puns up and out of the way (that’s the last one... because these plants are over it). Hanging baskets are the unappreciated heroes of the patio. Whether suspended from a shepherd’s hook above your perennial flower bed, or dangling from that one random hook on the underside of your pergola, hanging baskets extend your
